Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty)

Large breasts can not only affect your appearance but also your posture, causing back pain, slip discs etc.  Large breasts can also be flaccid.  After breast feeding and pregnancy breasts can experience significant weight loss and thus become saggy.  Breasts can also differ in shape and size.  All these changes can cause significant psychological problems.  However, they can be corrected by surgery.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic with a goal to correct the shape, size and position of the breasts.  In the case of differing size breasts, the larger breast may be made smaller or the smaller breast may be made larger.  The correct shape and position of the breast is achieved more commonly by removing the flaccid excess skin and fixing the glandular tissue into a natural position.  After surgery, a horizontal scar will remain on the lower side of the breast and a vertical scar starting from the nipple.  The lower horizontal scar is usually small and not visible.  A drain is usually left in for a few days.

The day after surgery patients can get up and gradually move, but bending is not recommended.  It is necessary to wear a flexible bandage for a few days.  Later it can be replaced by wearing a suspension bra for about a month. 

In the first week, you may experience local pain which can easily be treated by general painkillers, such as Algopyrin, Donalgin, Cataflam.  The hospital stay is usually not more than 1-2 days.  Full recovery is expected in 4-6 weeks.  The final shape will form only months after the operation.  Scars will start of being red but reduce in colour over the next 12 months.  You may experience sensitivity loss around the breast and nipples, or feel tension occasionally.

It must be mentioned that after several years, the "lifted" breast may become flaccid and may need further surgery.  It must also be mentioned that if a breast implant is removed, the breast will not recover its previous shape.  The tissue and skin would have changed and therefore may require a further operation, resulting in further scarring.
