Ear Pinning and Ear Re-shaping Surgery (Otoplasty)
Prominent, protruding, asymmetrical or large ears can be a severe embarrassment for adults and children alike. Fortunately, most of these problems can be corrected by way of a simple surgical procedure.
The procedure is commonly carried out under local anaesthetic. (Children have the procedure under general anaesthetic.) Patients will feel almost nothing and will be able to communicate with the surgeon and team throughout the procedure. The goal will be to correct the shape and position by a hidden incision and stitches made to correct the auricular cartilage. Compresses are used after the operation.
Patients may feel a degree of pain after the operation but this is easily treated with regular painkillers. The compress needs to kept on for 4 weeks to ensure that the cartilage is fixed in the correct position. Stitches are removed after 14 days.
Medical Risks
As with all surgical procedures, rare but possible complications may occur. Anaesthetic injections may cause fading, vomiting or increased heartbeat. Scars usually heal well without problems. However occasional wounds may occur. The blood supply to the ear cartilage may be inadequate. In spite of all our efforts, sometimes minor differences in shape or size occur.
The final result can be expected in a few weeks.
